Generating DBE Samples

Adam,

Generated samples with Tolerance 0.5.  Received 18 samples, 9 straight across the middle from left to right, 8 straight across the middle about one third down, and one in the upper left quadrant.  Nothing anywhere else.  Not the distribution I expected.  Any ideas?

By the way, I really like your site.  All your excellent instructional material in one spot, whether I want to learn more about PS or dive into PI.  Thank you.

  • Additional comment.  With a Tolerance of 1.5, I get 60 samples all in rows but with only five in the upper right quadrant.

  • Imaging dark nebula LDN 673.  So I started with 1.5 and removed everything placed on the nebula and other nebulosity of interest leaving only samples on starry fields.  The results were stunning.  Everything clearer, brighter, smoother.  Yes.
  • Hi Alan,

The smaller the tolerance the fewer samples you will get when there are larger variations in your data.
This parameter in combination with the minimum sample weight will ultimately determine the number of little boxes you get!

Of course the best answer is to dive into PI and my Fundamentals collection. I explain in great detail the answer to your question as well as the methodology for using DBE. That lesson might be worth a significant fraction of my access "fee"... it is one of the better lessons and DBE is one of the most powerful tools in PI>
