Integration Challenge

I attached an image that can help describe what im trying to accomplish. Either way, ive gone through the fast track training and some of the other videos that were recommended.  I practiced with the supplied data and now my own data. What i keep coming up against are those donuts (or something else?). The flats fall within the range needed when I use ATS. Im also calibrating with a "dark flat" that has the same shutter time as the flat. Is there something I should look into in regard to the way im calibrating or capturing? I went through the forum and tried to find a similar example, but im not really getting anywhere.

I was able to process the spots our, but i feel like it was at a sacrifice of the image... i attached a post process example.

Any help is great and i really appreciate all the time spent putting together this content! Its been a very challenging, but practical to follow experience.

  • @BlockHead fixed! Sorry about that..
  • You see the bright spots...these are locations that there is dust in your Flat that is NOT in your Light. The dark spots are places there is dust in your Light that is not in your flat.

Basically the Flat does not match the pattern of dust particles of your Light frame. This means the flat is either too old... or something changed between taking the flats and the lights.

This is a pretty typical acquisition issue.

  • Adam-  Would this be a good place for a synthetic flat?
  • No... you need to capture the dust in precisely the same way- casting shadows in the same way between your flats and lights. Synthetic flats will correct the large scale stuff... but not unique features like this.
    (at least not easily... )

If you can generate enough frames with properly calibration (no dust bits) then you can use these frames and selectively reject the issues.

  • Adam, thanks for the info. I suspected that would be the issue after diving a little more into the forum and videos.

So if im understanding this, taking flats before or after each session and then properly grouping them in WBPP should help solve the issue.

Thanks again for all you do.
  • Indeed... if your system is changing between sessions (or light frames)... yes, you need to match flats with the lights taken under the *exact* same conditions.
