Problem with Star Cores Showing Color?

Hi Adam; I've really learned quite a lot from the PI Fundamentals course - thanks for doing all the work putting it together.

I am processing LRGB data of image of IC 2944 (Running Chicken Nebula) and after I finally did the LRGB Combination, the cores in the larger stars are not white; they are pale with a shade of red coming through.  In a couple of the largest stars, the core has either multiple very small black spots or a single black spot in their core.  I have no idea what my mistake was to cause this or if there is something else going on.  Looking for guidance and thanks in advance.

  • Hi Reggie,

First question...did you happen to employ Drizzle?
(I ask concerning the black spots.)
Saturated stars, depending on the sensor, can unfortunately look weird when processed.
There are some techniques of adjusting them (but I haven't been terrible successful at it myself.)
There is a HSV repair that might help...

Arcsinstretch in particular can be an exacerbating thing for saturated stars... if you used this, you might want to try a different way to brighter the color image.

  • Thanks - I did use drizzle initially when I discovered this problem.  I went back and reprocessed the sub exposures from the beginning and but I did not use drizzle.  The result this time was much better; a lot of the problem was resolved with the exception of a couple of small size stars.

Thanks - I've not used arcsinstretch as of yet; I watched one of your tutorials where you use this process but I'm not yet confident with when it should be used.

  • Yeah...Drizzle can cause a number of used with saturation due to the way it works.
