Will there be a tutorial on MARS with dual band?

edited December 2024 in PixInsight
Hi,

MARS was released but it seems hard to get it to work with dual band OSC like L-Extreme.
I guess there are some possible workarounds, like using DBXtract etc.

Any chance we will see a tutorial covering this?

I've some nice data from 2600mc and L-Extreme if needed.

Thanks

  • Yes, I will be working on this.

  • By the way, I do not consider DBXtract to be a work-around. It seems to me to be the optimal way to proceed.

  • Okay great to hear.
  • Can somebody give me the 5 cent description of what MARS is?  I've done a little research but it hasn't made things much clearer.

    Thanks.

  • It is just the name of the all-sky survey of reference images that the new Multiscale Gradient Correction process uses. MARS = "The Multiscale All-Sky Reference Survey "  .

Of course the 5 minute answer is in my video on the subject.
These reference images are taken of the sky using wide field camera lenses through all of the filters we use in astrophotography. These serve as large scale references to subtract from our images (of smaller field of view) in order to capture gradients in our images. These gradient models are then subtracted from our images leaving us with, hopefully, gradient corrected images.

You owe me 5 cents. :)

  • Hi,

Is it me or is there no audio on the "Multiscale Gradient Correction: Narrowband and Dual Band Images" video. I can hear the usual title music, then nada.

  • Is there a tutorial already? I only bought "Narrowband FastTrack" so I guess it's in a different paid course?
  • Hi John and Pawel,

As far as I can tell..there isn't anything wrong with this video that I think you are referring to:
I can hear myself and all of that.

And concerning this video it is indeed in the Fundamentals collection of videos because that is where MultiScale Gradient should be. However for the moment there isn't much to do with dual band images since the OIII component of the MARS survey does not exist. You can remove gradients from Ha where there currently exist data. So...I would say that for the moment do not worry about using the MultiScale Gradient correction for dual band images at all.
