Blinking verus scripts and math

Hi - I do apologise if this is a well troden path of questioning but it seems an answer that is based on "depends" and hence experience is the key.

I have been using pixinsight clumsily for several years now but tend to sway to algorithms for things like sub selection etc as I have been time poor. With more time now and diving more into Fundamentals I do note your (@Adam) continued commitment to Blink. I suspect your subs are higher quality than mine and you have a practised eye on what to look for. Do you find you get a better feel and understanding of the data through using blink and hence that is why you do that? What would be your observation/commentary on subselection scripts and other algorthmic methods. Trying to determine a path else I'll continue to clumsily use algortithms :) - I need to invest time but better to focus on one I feel.

  • Yes, I do think that looking at the data will always be beneficial... and it is more beneficial to those who have less than 10 years of experience. With 30 years under my belt (which seems to expand with the Universe...)- I really have seen so much that just a quick perusal will be enough to tell me the overall data quality and if there any issues. There are so many issues! Subframe selector will always give you answers... yet you will not catch many issues that will cause frustration later (and you could have saved some heartbeats by just blinking the data).

The blinking isn't primarily for culling the bad frames... sure that is part of it- but it is to understand the data you have in hand more generally. Not all data is equal... and knowing this before doing any processing will help identify problems, manage expectation...etc etc.

Finally... this is a wonderful form of practice. You know I discovered asteroids and supernovae just by blinking right?
