GHS or HDRMT for high dynamic range targets

It’s clear to me that either a careful stretching using GHS or a midtone stretching followed bt HDRMT could work well for high dynamic range targets, like many galaxies. But is there any particular situation that one technique is more advisable than the other? In other words, how to choose?

  • I favor HDRMT. I think it is easier and quicker to get to where I want to go. I am a bit of an expert/specialist in it though. It is a very sensitive tool. Ever used a coping saw? I couldn't cut with that to make moudling come together if my life depended on it! HDRMT is kinda like that in terms of skill.

  • Ok, so if I get it right, HDRMT may be easier if you know all the tricks, and understand the results of each parameter. Otherwise, GHS may be a easier choice, after all you have the histogram to help you understanding what you are doing, and is more intuitive to know what to do next. Makes sense to you?
