GUM 15 - Contrast Enhancement Tool Choice

Hi Adam:

I enjoyed the GUM 15 processing videos...it's most instructive to be able to hear your thought process as you talk out loud while assessing images and deciding on needed processing steps in "real time".

Regarding the contrast enhancement technique.  I realize PixInsight offers several ways to perform contrast enhancement. Would you please comment on pros/cons of your LHH  + blend script approach, vs. perhaps using the Local Histogram Equalization (LHE) tool with a star mask in place?

  • Hi Jeff,

So far I have not been able to get  LHE to do what I want. (It is similar to the Photoshop High Pass filter with Overlay technique.). I guess I like the flexibility of LFHH so far since it determines a local contrast, and those regions can have some dependency- as well as different algorithms. That is a big space to play in.
LHE is global in its application of contrast. You could still use LFHH with a mask too...so that isn't really the difference. The blending I did...that is an "Adam Block" special technique to mixes images. Typically you do not use a mask when blending with Screen as I did.
