NB Colour Mapper Script

Adam, thanks to you and Mike for a great script. I have watched your video several times and tried it in practice (Prawn Nebula https://astrob.in/a48uf3/0/ )
One question - there are a number of traditional colour palettes for NB images (SHO for example). If you want to use the script to get images in these standard palettes is there a list somewhere of the colour values to insert in the script to get these standard palettes.

  • I am sure that Adam will have his own wisdom on this but let me throw in my 2d-worth!

For standard SHO you would place S in the red channel, H in green and O in blue. The equivalent in NBCM is to add a layer with S set to hue = 0, saturation = 1; a layer with H set to hue = 120, saturation = 1; and a layer with O set to hue = 240, saturation = 1.

    Similarly HOO would be a layer with H set to hue = 0, saturation = 1; a layer with O set to hue = 120, saturation = 1; and another layer with O set to hue = 240, saturation = 1.

In practice SHO images, although they may start life with R=S, G=H, B=O, often have these colours adjusted  - eg to reduce the strong green hue that often results so that the H moves towards a more orangey colour.

However, the power of NBCM is that it allows you to break out of the simple three primary colour channels and chose a custom colour to represent each emission. What would be great is if people using NBColourMapper would publish the colour combinations they use so others can benefit. For example I put the colour combinations I used in my image of IC1396A Elephant Trunk Nebula in the description. I have meant to start an NBCM Group on Astrobin to facilitate this but haven't got round to that yet - please feel free to do so your self if you feel inclined!

    CS, Mike
  • Thanks for addressing this Mike... I had hoped this might happen. :)
