Ed Huckleys NGC 6888 Crescent Tutorial Part 3 - Local_Normalization

Hi Adam,

I noticed in this tutorial that you selected the "Local Normalization" under "Normalization" in the Image Integration panel but you did not select "Local Normalization" under "Pixel Rejection" but instead left it at "Scale and Offset Zero".

Was this on purpose or an oversight?

  • Hi Tony,

That was not an oversight. (I mention this in my lesson on Image Integration). Local Normalization for purposes of Rejection is not a recommended method. It means the normalization- that is normally a global property of sky brightness (location) and signal strength (as expressed by scale) is instead done on a per pixel basis- which negates the globalness! It would have some strange effects and create a non-uniformity in rejection based on things that don't make sense for typical data.
