Workflow for processing mono narrowband images

New to PixInsight and to mono. I've gone through most of the videos but I'm not really a visual guy in the sense that I prefer a cookbook approach to things. That is, step 1 do this, step 2 do that. Then I go back and fill in all the details later.

Is there a recommended sequence of videos I can watch that will illustrate this specific process (mono, narrowband processing)?

I have all 3 of the exterminator tools. I do my stacking with AstroPixelProcessor (it's 6x faster than WBPP on my MacBook Pro M2 Max). So I am starting with 3 stacked FITS: H-Alpha, S-II and O-III. I ran BlurExterminator on Ha and SII with the default settings and NoiseExterminator on all 3 twice with P.denoise = 0.50; P.detail = 0.30; then did a HSO combine.

Not sure what to do next. My guess is maybe run StarExterminator, mask out the nebula on the Ha channel then use that to add the stars back? Also, I suppose next work on color saturation and stretching.

I'm using the most recent version of PI and I have to say, it's very buggy compared to the last version. It's crashed on me several times and I did a plate solve on one of my images which succeeded but then PI crawled to a halt afterwards and I had to restart.

  • Hi Richard,

The information you are looking for is in my Horizons collection of videos.
This is where all of the narrowband processing can be found.

I am continually adding processing examples here.

Based on your question, I do think that by watching my videos you will be much better informed. Narrowband image processing is much more freeform and choice driven than broadband.

  • Thank you. I will give that a go.

Is it possible to purchase these videos as a separate package? I not interested in Comet processing (for example).
  • Hi Richard,

I am not set up to accommodate this really. Technically I could copy the videos separately for you- but this kind of service would not be cost effective. You might as well just get Horizons and enjoy the content that interests you- it is also a good way to support me to continue to generate *more* content you do want.

Let me put it this way. if you went to a workshop on NB imagery you would pay more than the cost of all of Horizons.

  • OK... I suppose since I already spent €250 on PixInsight, $215 on Fundamentals... what's another $250? Well, it's another $250. I'll get by with the Fundamentals videos and figure out narrowband on my own.

    -thanks
    Richard
