Publishing Sections on NGC 6250 for PI Horizons

HI everyone. I am working on processing a new data set for the PixInsight Horizons edition of the Cosmic Canvas. This data of NGC 6250 is courtesy of Jose Joaquin Perez and it is a southern hemisphere object. I will be uploading sections as I create them. The first 5 sections are now available:

  • Don't seem to be able to access sections 6 and above.  Sections 5 and below are fine.  My subscription seems I'm order.
  • Hi Rex:

    Lesson:

Appears OK and available as far as I can tell. I haven't uploaded the next section yet... but will soon.
I will also make the data available soon too.

Can you please verify you *cannot* watch the above?

  • Oh... section 07 did have an issue. I fixed it.
Thank you for letting me know!

  • Hi Adam,

I have a couple of comments from these videos, both related to the camera characteristics.

First, when you run the BasicCCDParameters, you are using the readout noise value in electrons, and then doing the math to convert to data numbers for the MureDenoise script.  This isn't necessary.  BasicCCDParameters gives the readout noise value twice, once in electrons and once in data numbers.  If you scroll down one line from where you are in the video, you will see the value in data numbers.

My second comment is that in both of the videos where you do PCC, you are getting the camera model from the FITS header and then going to the manufacturer's site for the pixel size.  You even comment in both videos that pixel size is not in the FITS headers - but it is.  It's even visible on the screen in the video.

Note that pixel size not guaranteed to be there in all cases.  I'm looking at some of my raw images right now, and my software is not reporting the pixel size in FITS, but I know that I've seen it in some of my older data.  It's probably dependent on the camera driver and the capture software.  I've been using SGP for a while now, and I don't see it.  I used MaxIm/DL for many years, and I suspect that it does write the pixel size into the FITS headers if it has the information available.

I think that some is missing between section 10 and section 11.
Section 10 is Enhance Bright Stars and seems finish correctly.
Section eleven starts with an already done starless ha image. I think that something is missing.
Can you take a look? Maybe section 12 is section 11, I don't know.
  • Hi Giuseppe,

You are absolutely right. Section 11 had an initial segment I did not include when I created the video!
I fixed it and uploaded the new version of section 11. I think it will make more sense now.
Thank you so much for catching this!

  • Thank you for your super fast answer and fixing.
    Ciao
