WBPP not recognizing master bias to calibrate flats.

I recently started using bias frames to calibrate flats rather than dark flats. But as the title suggests, master bias files are not recognized as a calibration option for flats. I have to re-load the entire set of bias files if I want to calibrate flats with bias frames.

  • I think I know the issue...
And I JUST made the video about it!!
    amazing...
Give me a moment and let me upload...please watch and tell me if this answers the question.
If not.. you will need to provide screenshots of WBPP (use the Diagnostics button).

Let me know if this is possibly it?

  •     I saw  a similar answer on the PI forum, that is that the flats were already calibrated thus did not need a dark flat or bias, and the option was disabled.  My case is dealing directly with bias...even with a group of un-calibrated flats it would not use a master bias. It would only use the list of separate bias frames( that would become a master within that session obviously)
But I could be mistaken...so let me re-create the issue and take a SS.  Right after a rather large data set finishes it's tumble through WBPP  ;)
  • OK.
Matching darks do take precedence over biases. So if you have a dark that matches.. this would occur- but this doesn't explain things in your case either.

What you are describing is an instance where something is not longer matching. Either the type of image, some grouping keyword is messing things up, or the size of the images are different as well as filters. So... let us see those screenshots. The answer is there.

  • Absolutely! There was a long-winded discussion on the PI forum regarding the fits header instrument name keyword not matching; there being spaces in the name, but I checked and both single bias and master bias used the same camera name
  • I've taken 5 screenshots to try and show the issue:
    1) shows a master bias loaded
    2) Says it won't calibrate, no master bias
    3) Dark checked (it's for the lights) says it will use a master bias
4)Load single bias files (these are the same bias used for the master)
    5) It will use these bias files for calibration

  • The binning isn't matching.
Your bias shows a binning of "1" ...
    Your flats show no binning.
So, is there a binning value in your headers for your flats?

Also, for the sake of diagnostics... you remove your keywords (it isn't clear to me they are necessary either, but I cannot see them all).

  • I'll check...all files were 1x1 binning.  If there is no binning...is that not assumed to be 1x1?

  • The Calibration window shows flats and bias1x1 binning
In the bias "list"  window it refers to it as Bin1 or Binning 1
  •    Well you can certainly imagine my surprise when Adam called me to discuss my issue!!
But what wasn't surprising was that he solved my issue...and indeed it was Keywords.
Keywords aren't necessary under normal circumstances...WBPP already sorts by filter, exposure etc.
The Binning keyword was not allowing the flats to use my master bias.
The filename for flats used  "Bin1" , the filename for the master bias used " Bin-1"
The first SS shows the setting that caused the issue, the 2nd SS shows after I un-checked the Keywords box.
Thanks again Adam, and I hope this might help someone else.
