Local Normalization and building the reference image

HI Adam

your local normalization tutorials are great

my question is this: How important is it to remove the black edges around registered images when creating the master referenc eimage for local normalization?

My dithering always results in some black borders. i can crop it but then I'd have to crop everything prior to final integration. i typically crop much later in my processing

Thanks!

  • Local Normalization is fairly restrictive spatially... so the calculation and effects of its application occur on "small" scales with respect to the entire image. In another words... how LN is calculated and applied to something in the center of your frame is not (strongly) affected by garbage at the edges.

Now... at the edges where there is both good and bad data- there is likely some weirdness. I have not noticed a need to crop anything in advance of using LN. It may be good practice and certainly couldn't hurt- but I haven't been doing it.

  • Thanks Adam

i didn't crop and it seemed to still do the job, but i'll be mindful of that
