No astrometric data in fits headers after the plate solver process

Hello Adam,

For the start I juts want to say thanks for this course.
Anyway, I'm currently going through the Fasttrack #6 Do the Astrometry -> FastTrack 2022 : Image Solver video and I have a question regarding the Astrometric data.

1. The plate solver did solve the image successfully, yet there are no related astrometric's entries in FITS Headers of the image.
2. When I analyze the pixels, I can see the RA and DEC info (please take a look ath the uploaded image).
3. When I close the Pixinsight and later start the new session, load the image, astrometric data is visible in "Process Console" (please take a look ath the uploaded image).
4. Howevere, there are no entries in Fits headers (please take a look ath the uploaded image).

I'm using 1.8.9-2 Ripley (x64), build 1573. That might be the reason, since, in your videos, you are using older release of Pixinsight.

Am I doing somthing wrong or, perhaps, missing some settings, or is this due to changes made by the developers in some of the later version of Pixinsight compared with the one you are using in your videos? Do you know what is the cause of this discrepancy and will there be any negative impact on later stages of the process (I think not but I do prefer to ask)?

Best regards,

Mladen

  • I *just* sent an e-mail about this!
Are you getting my e-mails? Please let me know.
You are not doing anything wrong.
Yes, this is a consequence of the new version.
I have to make the decision to re-do all of FastTrack or "patch" it to keep up with changes such as this.
Currently, my mind is in the "patch" mode... but I need to find all of instances I need to do this.

Can you please let me know the video and time-stamp this topic is mentioned?

To answer your question, now with the new version you need to access the View Explorer to see if a view or XISF file has a solution.

There are no negative impacts- the metadata is now being managed differently.

    Hi
    BlockHead,

Thank you for your answer. I managed to find the astrometric data under the View
    Explorer as per your suggestion.

I haven't received your email, although I've checked the spam folder and I've
    received emails from Adam before.

As for the time stamp, please check the category of Fasttrack 2022, image solver and
    its discussion, namely:

Fasttrack, Step 6., Do the Astrometry, cca 12:25

Fasttrack, Step 6., Does it Measure Up, cca 8:25

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

  • Hi Mladen,

The last note on the members page (when you log in) is a link to my e-mail list:

Thanks for the timestamps. I will need to take care of this. Would you agree that so far there are no show stoppers even though I am demonstrating with a previous version of WBPP? At the moment, I am thinking just some "patches" to the existing videos will do.

    Thanks,
    The Blockhead

  • Hi Blockhead,

I just joined the e-mail list.
This is not a blocker for sure and the rest of the videos were easy to follow. The fact that I was able to analyze the image and see the RA and DEC info and that the astrometric data were visible in Processs Console were pointing that there are astrometric data somewhere in the image. I was merely interested where is it "hidden". And of course I don't like unpleasent surprises, that's why I asked about potential negative impacts as well.
Patches might work. Glad to be able to help with timestamps.

    Cheers!

  • I'm having a similar issue. I ran an image through the Image Plate Solver Script v6.0. The process console shows that it ran to completion with no errors. I scroll through the log in process control and it looks like all of the astrometric solutions have been calculated. but when I look at the FITs Header none of the information is in it. If I try to move on to the SPCC and run that I get the error "Image has no astrometric solution". Is there a bug in the 6.0 script and how do I work around this?

I've attached a text file with the text from the process console. I've also attached a Word document with screen shots of the FITs Header after the Image Plate Solver was run on that image file.

  • Hi Jon,

A couple of things. Please verify:

    1. In WBPP you had "astrometric" checked. It seems like you did.
    2. When you used ChannelCombination (did you use ChannelCombination??) you need to have the box checked to Inherit the Solution. It is checked by default. Was it checked?
    3. Use the View Explorer to see if there is an astrometric solution associated with the view/image or not. Is it?
    4. You do not load files as you have show in ImageSolver. Instead, you want to use it on an active view/image.
