Laggy Video Play

There are some reports by new customers (all of this is currently less than 24 hours old) that for a few individuals the video play back is slow.
If you experience issues and can rule out your end- please do report issues. The web support team (the company I am using) is working on fixing things.
On my end, everything looks good- so I would need to hear from those when it is not.

  • The videos were loading fine and running without delay for me this morning, but this afternoon none of the fundamental videos seem to be able to load and play.  Is there some kind of maintenance going on?

  • Yes, sorry. Web support made an adjustment that apparently broke things.
Hopefully will get everything fixed sorry.

  • I'm not sure if this helps, but here's my feedback on the laggy video:

I believe the situation has generally improved after the various adjustments, however, after watching many hours of the Pixinsight Fundamentals videos (which are excellent by the way), I've noticed that I generally experience the video buffering during times when something on the video is rapidly changing. Here, rapid change = the introduction animation, blinking through images or rapidly going through some documentation.  When this rapid change is not occurring, then the video plays smoothly

  • Same with me....still the same...
  • There may be something to this observation. I will be experimenting with the frame rate. It could be my frame rate is too high. I know I am pretty quick with the mouse... but likely I don't need super high frame rates for screen recordings.

I haven't heard any Chrome complaints lately... is this from Chrome?

  • Hi Adam

    Yes, this is with Chrome.

On the frame rate issue, your videos will have a very high peak to average data change rate unlike "normal" videos. So, perhaps the video data pipe allocated for streaming is only suitable for near average data rates.

  • Hi Alan,

I uploaded a new version of the LRGB video. It is produced at 24fps.

Do you (or anyone else) see a difference in the playback?

    Thanks,
    Adam
  • Hi Adam

The beginning (with the animation) is still laggy - I haven't checked the rest (c50m) of the video.

  • OK. I will send a note indicating the issue still persists.
I both lowered the frame rate to 24fps as well as decremented the compression "quality" - halving the file sizes. I think it is the best I can do.

I went ahead and did this adjustment for all videos in the WORKFLOW chapter. So please check these out as well.

    Thanks
  • PI Fundamentals videos won't start.  All I get is the introductory download circle.

  • Hi Alan,

    Please try a few things.
    1. Don't wait on the circle thing. It is misleading. Move the playback slider forward in time...and then back.
    2. Alternatively, try to reload the page.
    3. So far everyone that has been able to play videos at some point... can play them by doing something like the above.

Usually one of these options will work.
I am very close to making the videos available for download as well. Working on it...
Web support is also trying to help with the weird video playback... but it is slow going.

P.S. I did check the site... and from a remote location (I am at Kitt Peak right now)... the videos do play be me.
