Usage of masks in combination with color saturation

Hi all,
still going down my learning curve with fundamentals :-). I am processing M51 from an OSC. After DBE, SPCC, BXT, NXT, comes colour saturation and I noticed that if I push blue and red/yellow on the galaxy, I get a more "colour full" background I mean I start to see some red in the background. So I did a mask to apply coloursaturation on stars and M51. But now I clearly notice that the stars are becoming much more colour full, that is normal but I am wondering if I should not have two masks (or some gray mask) on the stars to mitigate the effect of the color saturation compared to the galaxy itself.
Any advice?

  • Yes, your logic sounds fine to me. There are a number of ways to approach this- but the simplest (these days) would be to create a starless image and use it as a mask (or just apply the color saturation to the starless image itself). You can always black clip the "background" of the mask to avoid increasing the color noise below a chosen threshold.
