Quick question on WBPP

I typically use NSG to create the weightings for the ImageIntegration process as opposed to PI's native local normalization tool.  But the latest version of WBPP has this button asking us whether we want to run WBPP at its highest quality level.  When we instruct it to run at its highest quality level, it automatically produces a bunch of LN reference frames and LN frames, which adds over an hour to the entire processing time on my machine.

As an NSG user, is this extra time something I just have to live with?  I assume it's still advisable to select the high quality option when running WBPP and just deal with the longer processing time...?

  • Hi Aaron,

I am not certain I understand. If you are using NSG- you would only be configuring WBPP to go through the registration of the data and stop there. So you would not be using a weighting scheme...and you would not be doing the LN part either. Please let me know where if we are not on the same page.

  • Hi,

I'm sure I'm using confusing language...what I mean is that when I typically use WBPP, I do in fact stop at the registration step, but WBPP still prompts us to configure WBPP either for maximum speed or maximum quality.

If we select maximum quality, local normalization is enabled and WBPP produces a number of LN reference frames that, as an NSG user, I don't need.  The production of these LN reference frames takes a great deal of time.

The other option is to maximize for speed in which case local normalization is disabled.  See the attached screen shots.

I'm willing to wait longer for WBPP to do its thing if selecting MAXIMIZE FOR QUALITY really will make a difference for NSG users.  But if the fact that I will be using NSG in the next step of the process means I can maximize for speed with no loss of quality on my end result, I'd just as soon do that and get things done more quickly.  Does that make sense?

  • Here is what I think the confusion is. Those buttons are just shortcuts for checking/unchecking items. That is all they do.

Do me a favor "uncheck" the LN section of the LIghts tab. Then click the "Maximum quality" button.. you will see it gets re-checked. That is all that does (and a few other items). The "faster" options therefore uncheck. This is all because people do not understand what LN and some other items are about (and do not care to learn). :)

So if you *uncheck* Subframe weighting, LN and Image Integration..I am pretty certain LN will not be invoked.

  • Got it, thank you!  I didn't realize they simply enable PI's native LN tool and nothing more.

My takeaway is that since I will be putting the calibrated/registered files through the NSG script after WBPP, I can safely select the "Fastest with Lower Quality Results" option and not have to worry about any loss of quality.

    Thanks again!
