Veil nebula

edited September 2022 in PixInsight
Monsoon season took a short break here in the desert, so I took the opportunity to shoot a new pointing and tracking model.  I used the veil nebula for a test subject, and then ran into something in processing I can't explain. I'm thinking there must be an easy explanation for it. In the attached folder there is a representative Ha sub, and the Ha and O3 masters from WBPP. I see a flat field problem in the O3 I might work on, but the result for the Ha master has me at a loss. I shot a separate set of flats but got the same result. I'd appreciate any ideas.

  • The calibrated subframe is beautiful.
Please check the registered frames and verify they are *all* aligned with respect to one another in Ha. (Use Blink). It appears to me something has gone wrong.... either with Normalization or as part of Image Integration (because the input data was not right).

You should be able to take your registered data and convince your self everything is good by just simply integrating the images (don't even worry about Local Normalziation for diagnostic purposes).

  • I removed the master dark from WBPP and the resulting integrated master was fine. I had been doing the modeling run previously, and I must have set up a preprocess step in acquisition to subtract a dark before plate solve. Then, at 2 AM, I got the idea to collect some Ha data and probably just forgot about the preprocess setting. I honestly don't remember, but testing suggests it must be the case. Thanks Adam. I was focused on the calibration data. The "input data was not right" was the clue.
