NGC3486 Lum: Image Integration and MureDenoise after DBE

Since we have 37 clear filter subs I tried GESD for pixel rejection and keep getting small black artifacts in parts of the galaxy. I played around with ESD significance (up to .25) and reduced it some, but had total 3% rejections.
I then tried your go to, Winsorized Sigma Clipping at a setting of both 2.2 high and 3.0 high. Either setting cancelled the artifacts, and less than 1 something percent total rejects at  the 3.0 setting.

Your method and goal of teaching us how think, and not just how to do, is powerful.

The section on DBE for n3486 was the best I have watched. I have used symmetry before, but never understood that the one pixel anchoring the symmetry circle was used to set the correction.

After DBE, I tried Mure Denoise with little/no effect on the noise or image. Even with Variance Scale set to 2.0. Any ideas?
So I went back to my pre-DBE image and Mure Denoise at Variance 0.5 gave a significant improvement. Variance 1.0 was too much.

Perhaps you can revisit Mure Denoise if the image has DBE applied.

  • You cannot touch an image before using MUREDenoise. It is used immediately after integration. You are modeling the expected noise in the image... so DBE changes this (and hence it does not work). I am pretty sure I say this about MUREDenoise.
Perhaps its needs to be repeated.

I agree your above statement to do MUREDenoise immediately after integration. I tried it on my DBE image, and it does not work.
But your video states it a little differently at 16:03 to 16:25.
Following this you apply MUREDenoise and it seems logical you are doing it to the previous DBE image. Now I can see the Image does not say DBE, just n3486_L, which is the correct image for MUREDenoise. But that pre DBE image suddenly pop up in the sequence of things.

  • Adam,
You did clearly state at least twice that MUREDenoise should be done immediately after integration. It was my laziness to not go back to before DBE, which I based on what the video said in one little statement.
