A true echo chamber at the moment...
Hopefully more people will join...
typing out what the voice in my head is saying is even worse than simply listening to it.

  • Just found the forum and pleased to be an "Early Adopter".

The videos are outstanding. I've been using PI exclusively to process my images for some years now and accordingly have some experience and proficiency with the program. Nonetheless, found the videos to be very helpful and informative. Particularly useful are your easy to follow explanations of how the various tools and processes work. I feel certain that these tutorials will significantly shorten the learning curve for both new and experienced users. Look forward to seeing additional content as you have time to create more videos.

  • Thank you Steve. And thank you for your invaluable feedback. Super helpful. You were also an "Early Adopter" of PI as well... so this seems to be something you excel at. :)
I did post your sentiment on my very small list of such review type comments.

  • Like your CCDStack and Photoshop video materials, the new PI materials meet the high level of presentation quality that provides the viewer with substantive information to start and improve using PI.  Providing users with the philosophy behind using PI processes to meet quality imaging objectives is invaluable. The videos far exceed the information quality found on YouTube or elsewhere. I'm looking forward to the possibility having some example work spaces to follow along with the videos.  I am working alone on improving my PI skills and find the videos a powerful way to orient myself in the techniques of quality astrophotography processing that meets my desire to go beyond cookbook demonstrations of the program's use.
  • Thanks Carl. That is really good to hear. Like you, I was pretty much on my own (and talking to myself for hours... repeating myself at that) learning and trying to make this content. So it is good to hear the density of the material  is reasonable so far.

  • Just purchased and started to look at the PinInsight fundamentals. However, there appears to be some type of video watermark(?) (distracting circle of little moons moving around) right in the center of the screen. It is very aggravating. Any way to turn it off?
    Regards,
    Bob
  • Hi Robert,

The little circle comes from your browser interpreting the video player's "loading" icon. It should disappear if your video is playing smoothly! (is your video playing smoothly?)

So please try to seek to a future spot in the video and then go back- there was a report from a tester that this helps. If not, please try a different browser. And if that fails, please send me an e-mail and I will send it on to web support for help.

    Thanks,

  • Is the web streaming service working OK?  I purchased a subscription yesterday and watched 2 videos yesterday (both excellent).  I can't seem to get the streaming to work today.  It just hangs and doesn't play.
  • I just checked the two free videos and they play for me.  The ones covered by my subscription - Fundamentals - don't play today.
  • Just to follow up on the thread- as far as I know as of 6-22-2018- the site is back up and running (perhaps even more smoothly than before).

  • Great Videos Adam.  I've been using PI for a little under a year and was feeling pretty comfortable using it.  It's easy when working alone to find a simple solution and keep repeating it.  I had not bothered to explore the interface as I was "getting by" with what I knew.  Just started watching the Fundamentals and in the first 15 minutes said to myself, "this is really worth it".  I've found your previous tutorials very helpful and this new platform is a great extension.  Looking forward to going through the rest of the content.

    Cheers,
    Ladd
  • 15 minutes? Geez... Thanks Ladd.
I would like to have some feedback (and hopefully some more positive) when members have gone through the material. I will still be uploading more in the coming days. I have already made some adjustments based on some suggestions I have received.

I need more "reviews" on my site. :) Early days and all.

  • I have always wanted to learn how to use Pixinsight.  Despite several attempts, the learning curve got the best of me.  I have worked though many of Adam's other excellent tutorials so I decided to give the new PI Fundamentals tutorial a try.  I worked through all of the videos demonstrating the Fundamentals of PI and the workflow example that was provided.  In a methodical way, the Fundamentals tutorial goes into quite a bit of detail explaining how the various processes work and how they might be applied at various stages of the workflow.  After working through the tutorial, I understand why so many say that the PI learning curve is a little steep.  Using only PixInsight and following the workflow in the tutorial, I was able to process one of my older data sets (NGC7023 - The Iris Nebula).  My result can be found here:

-- I couldn't get the image to load in Chrome but Edge seemed to work.

  • Awesome result!
  • Hello Adam,

Just wanted to thank you for producing these lessons on PI.  Three years ago I started in this hobby with little knowledge of the night sky or photography much less astrophotography.  After attending a local club outreach and seeing the "pretty pictures" of one of the members I was hooked.  Little did I realize that the most challenging (and rewarding) part is the processing of all that data.

I started with PI thanks to great advice from another astrophotographer.  While there are several good sources of information on the internet about how to use certain tools and even how to process a particular target from beginning to end, the cookbook style left me with many questions about just what the heck is going on with the data.  I attended a workshop and when asked what I would like to get out of the sessions my reply was to understand what the tools are actually doing behind the scenes.  So, it is with great pleasure that I discovered your site since your approach is exactly what  I have been looking for.  I am half way through Fundamentals and while so far much has been a review for me I feel I am gaining much more "Insight" into the power of PI and how to get the most out of it. I look forward to starting the Horizons series in the near future.

    Wishing you much success,
    Steve
  • Just wanted to echo what others have said.  I've only been doing astro for just under 2 years, but I have the good fortune to be in a place where I have access to an excellent club with some folks who's names you would probably recognize...

Even still, having finally gotten to a point with Pi where I *thought* my images where good,  I purchased your Fundamentals because I still had this feeling of "not being in control" of the workflow.   I have just been browsing around the videos for about 30 min when I watched the Scripts one, which turned me onto the GAME script you recommended, but also by the same author an "Advanced Sharpen" script, which took my Ring Nebula to the next level!

At this point I cannot wait to finish the fundementals course and move on to the Horizons, I feel like going back to re-process as much as I can already!!!!
