M51 from Josep processing - Curves Transformation

Hi Adam,
When doing CurvesTransformation to the RGB image with Preview, I can then click on the R or G or B channels in the preview window. I notice here that the B and G have great detail, but the R image is without due to the known focusing issue. See screen print attached.

Is there anything to bring back some red detail? I tried MLT (after extract RGB channels) on the red channel. It looked much better by itself, but it totally screwed up the colors after recombine.
So is this an "it is what it is" state, and just move on. Or is there any reasonable adjustment for improving red detail?
BTW, I am not complaining. It is a great learning process of what the different tools can do.
Thks,
   Roger

  • Interesting. I never looked at the data in that way (I am surprised the Red channel is that smoothed/fuzzy).
So... in my experience, I do not see a "reconstructive" method of "reasonable adjustment." It could be something exists..but I am not aware of it. This is literally GIGO.

  • Thanks for your comments.
Well I was really shocked to see the red data compared to blue or to green. MLT does make it have more detail, but it may be different detail than the detail if focus were good.
I am also wondering just the opposite...  why the out of focus red data does not ruin the color balances (ie in different places in the galaxy). Maybe PCC fixed that.

Apparently Josep has much better processing skills than we do, or a much better data set with his recent M51 APOD.
  • Per his website he had 34 hrs data taken in March/April 2020; CCD Stack + PS
    No ouch needed!
And if we had all his 'good data' then we would not learn as much. So I think your tutorial's data set was perfect for our learning.
  • Hi, I am Josep, thanks! I have to say that I used the same data set I had from the beginning, I only have one. No new data, but different processing steps... Anyhow, it took me seven different re-processing sessions and many hours using tiny steps ahead until the final version... Yes, I used CCDStack + PS. I learnt this method from the best (Adam) in 2015.

    Josep,
Hi, I really had fun learning from Adam and using your data set. Just thinking of the data from your scope (vs my little 4" refractor with CMOS color camera) gave me a big smile from the beginning. I really wanted to do a good job.
After I went through processing it once I saw several places to improve my result by removing more red halos from the smaller stars that were masked out in the first go-around, and more MMT work.

From the beginning of Adam's instruction, he was trying to make processing as simple and straightforward as possible. Many imagers want that, and the only side-step was handling the red data.

I hope you can make another raw data set available to Adam.

This is the easy part. I will talk to Adam regarding another one...
