First Mosaic Advice Needed - 2 different cameras used.

Hi Adam,
I am imaging for creating my first mosaic, the California Nebula. I have all the images needed for upper half (97x600s from air polluted Hong Kong).  For lower half I have about 1/3 of what I want.
-- All images so far were taken in 2021 with my QHY168c (4952 x 3288, 4.8μm). I have all the flats, flat darks, and darks.
-- Now it is 2023 and the QHY is replaced with a ZWO 2600MC pro (6248x4176, 3.76μmto finish the lower. Calibration files TBD.

I would like to know if the camera change, for completing the last 2/3 of the lower images, is going to cause any problems with creating the calibrated and post processed lower? And if the processed lower should mosaic okay with the upper?.
-- I will take calibration files for the 2600MC when I do the last 2/3 of the imaging.

As I like to learn from your videos, which video series should I start for learning about creating the mosaic?
I am looking for the general outline, and precautions, and your overall suggestions.

Thanks for your time, advice, and as always your expertise!

  • Hi Adam, I would appreciate your comments on my message.
    Thank you,

  • Sorry Roger...

When using Photometric Mosaic, the scaling factor that is computed should compensate for the difference in flux/signal between the cameras. So I do not think this is an issue. It is possible (as I show) to tune the scaling factor as well. As long as all of this is linear data- I think everything should be fine. I am assuming in both cases you captured images under the light polluted skies such that the gradients will likely be "commensurate" in degree. Photometric Mosaic does a fantastic job at both matching the seams and allowing for a "taper" into the target frame.

Certainly you must be aware I did several videos on Photometric Mosaic?
The Cone Nebula example has the full explanation and demonstration:

So I do not think there is anything particularly special to do. Of course, I have not walked the exact path you are in this situation so it could be there is some extra of point of interest that you will learn along the way.

  • Hi Roger,
Make sure you are using the latest version of PhotometricMosaic - version 4.0
It can be downloaded from my website:

  • John, Ahh you are sitting there in my subconscious! Thank you for the reminder!

Adam, Thanks for your response. I never watched the mosaic videos because I never thought I would be doing a mosaic. That is because it is a challenge for me to get enough data, with the skies here, for just one object. Never mind two. Now I am close to the finishing the 2nd imaging set.
Now it is time to watch those videos and think what I am going to do.

    Thanks to both of you!
    Roger
