Trouble Using HDRComposition

Hi Adam,

I'm having a bit of trouble using HDRComposition.

I took some images of the Orion Nebula last month, but on one night I forgot to take shorter exposures to expose for the core. I did do this the second night, but when I try to combine the different exposures I still get a blown out core. I have done this successfully in the past on different data using the same techniques below.

Here's what I have done to get to where I am:

WBPP twice on each data set separately.
ImageIntegration twice on each data set separately.
Cropped both images.
StarAligment on each integrated image.
HDRComposition

I don't know if this is the correct way of doing things when using HDRComposition.

For reference, these were the camera settings I used on each data set:

Core
15 sec
f/5.6
800 ISO

Background Dust
30 sec
f/5.6
3200 ISO

I suspect that it could be because I shot the two nights with a higher ISO than normal that it's blowing out the core as I only shot 29 images exposing for the core on the second night.

If needed, I can provide a link to the files that were created with StarAlignment and the final HDR image that was outputted by HDRComposition if you like?

I am hoping that this can be resolved as I don't know what's going on. If you need any more information, please let me know.

  • Before I attempt to assist with HDRComposition... of course I am going to point you to what I consider the better method. I say forget about HDRComposition. It relies on a quality linear fitting. I think HDRMT is the way to go. Are you saying in 30 seconds your core is completely and 100% saturated??

Did you see my recent workflow for M42 in Fundamentals?

  • All good, I'd rather know what your thoughts are! :)

To answer your question, the core in those images are just about blown out, yes.

Might have to go back and re-shoot the data again with more consideration for the core.

I did watch your example with your M42 workflow, it was so helpful! I did use it alongside my processing as reference for my initial edit.

  • Hmm... Well..I don't actually have an HDRCOmposition tutorial... is your data worthy of being an exemplar?

  • Attached is what a registered sub looks like straight out of ImageIntegration.

If my data is not the best example, please let me know as I am more than happy to provide you some other M42 data I shot a few years ago that worked great when I used HDRComposition.

  • Where is the image that shows the problem?

  • From the files I provided, there is the two images that I used before HDRComposition and the HDR image just in case.

    The problem file is:

    integration_normal_cropped_r.xisf

Whenever I use that file with my core exposures in HDRComposition, it doesn't work.

Just in case the data I previously provided isn't good, here's a link to the other data I was talking about:

That link contains data that I used with HDRComposition and it worked.

Apologies in the delay in responding, I live in Australia and it's only 7:39am at the time of writing this message where I am.

    :)
