I've been having a difficult time registering my data lately as PixInsight is "unable to find an initial set of putative star pair matches". I'm wondering if it has to do with a distorted shape in my stars. If you look at the attached subs and stacked png, you'll see almost a chevron-like highlight in the upper right aspect of the star. If it is the distortion of the stars, is there something I can adjust to fix this? I've made sure everything is tight and have tried adjusting tilt. Any help would be appreciated as when I'm able to register images, more than half of my data will be missing due to an inability to pair stars. I've tried to correct the effect with deconvolution, but it just makes it worse as it highlights the chevron pattern. Thank you,
Yeah it appears you have out-of-focus stars and a bit of a collimation issue. Deconvolution will not help this.
In StarAlignment under the Star Detection you can set compute PSFs to Never. I believe this will force to find stars based on just a structure map rather than a PSF (a round shaped thing). This might help you align this data better. Ultimately it seems like you can optimize your data acquisition and minimize the processing burden. Give it a try.
Okay great thank you! I'll see what I can do in star alignment. I only recently received the gear used to create this data (which was more of a trouble-shooting night, as reflected in the data's quality), so still have some adjustments to make. Thanks again for the help, including the collimation problem! yet another skill to learn :D
