Comet Processing

Hi Adam

Was wondering if you have any interest in doing some sessions on comet processing in PI, or if not, if you could make any suggestions for a problem I am having.  I have used the CometAlignment process successfully (although I found it somewhat challenging) to process an image of Comet Neowise in 2020, and achieved a result that I was happy with:

However, I have 12 light frames I acquired of comet C2017 T2 Panstarrs passing by M81/M82 that I have not been able to process with CometAlignment (I can't get adequate subtraction of the comet), not sure why.  If you are interested, I uploaded one of the light frames here:

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  If you are interested in doing a session on comet processing and would find my data from either Neowise or Panstarrs helpful, I am happy to provide them.

Thanks

Ed

  • Hi Ed,

Yeah, I guess I was going to wait for a nice comet.... lol.
The best ones to process are those that are moving perpendicular (or askew) with respect to the tails of the comet. And the motion isn't too much or too little... tough critters!

Subtraction simply will not work (well) without enough spacing between the glow of the comet- in addition to issues with the Linear Fit of images. So it ends up being a big fiddle affair.

So...that was a long answer to I don't think I can tackle your comet data right now. I do have some NeoWise example data i can use... but I have to do NB videos first.
