Double image after integrating 2 nights data.

Same setup, telescope, camera, location, nothing changes except the clock, 2 consecutive nights.  Canon 77D camera 509 30 second images split over the 2 nights.  I have tried multiple methods of calibrating, aligning and integrating but always get some variation of a double image.

  • Joseph,

Likely the images have not been aligned. You need to employ your FastTrack Training tool kit!

    1. Blink the registered data... is it really aligned?
    2. Could the reason it is not aligned be because of hot pixels? (Did you use Cosmetic Correction...like "Adam Block" tells you? lol )

    Let us know!

  • I will try again,  I have followed the flow, calibrate, CC, align, debayer and so on.  One clue is WBPP2 fails with a geometry error.  Also I think the number of images may be overwhelming my system.  I only have 32 GB of RAM.  I will blink again after aligning the images and remove all the that look odd.
  • Reviewing the video lessons I was able to successfully integrate the image using WBPP2.  I originally had 509 30 second images captured with a canon 77D unmodified camera.  Using Blink and SubFrameSelector I reduced that to 174 images.  Post integration processing has been PhotometricColorCalinration, DynamicCrop, ArcinhStrech and CurveTransformation.  I have learned all of this from studying the online lessons and working with this image, I would say about 40 hours so far.  But I am a true beginner.  I think a lot of the noise is from the camera sensor.  At first I thought it was from light pollution but these images were taken at a relatively dark site used by the local astronomy club.  But it is Florida and the air is always moist.
Any processing advice would be appreciated.

  • Yeah... a DSLR will simply have limitations. I have never taken a DSLR image of M51 that looks this good...nice job. Beating the readnoise by maybe doing longer exposures  (since the sky was dark) could help. But then acquisition becomes an issue if you go for 300second or 600 second exposures. Unmodified, Uncooled... all of these things work against you.
