Meridian Flip

I have a new rig. This is my third night imaging & everything is going great, except…
Each night, during the first half hour, it tries to do a meridian flip (with no success) even though the meridian is over 2 hours away.
Can anybody tell me what’s going on?

  • The meridian flip does happen (successfully) at the proper time.
  • I don't know what CAA is..maybe that is the software controlling the telescope. Whatever the software is will have a limit that you can set to determine the flip hour angle. Some software is even more sophisticated and allows for a window of time in order to complete exposures- but never hitting any hard stops (or worse).

If not the above- another way to get this behavior is to have the time (computer clock) be wrong or your longitude be wrong. (anything with time)

  • Hi Adam,
ZWO CAA is my electronic camera rotator. My controller is the ASIAIR Mini, built into the ASI 2600MC Air camera.
Everything appears to be set up correctly in the mount section, telling it to stop guiding 1 minute before the meridian flip & resume guiding and shooting 3 minutes after. That is working perfectly! I can’t figure out those failed early meridian flip attempts (3 last night).
The time & lat/long are right on.

  • Yeah... I don't know. Time, location, and software limits. That is all I know to look at.
Some  software have a "side of pier" that might also come into play.
