Stretching

I'm pretty sure I went into this thinking backwards, but I want to be sure.

The STF is display only.  It isn't changing the data and it is just affecting the way things are displayed.

The other transformations (Curves, Histogram, GHS, etc.) are all permanent stretches/alterations.  In other words, they aren't just changing the display, they are actually altering the data.

Is that basically correct?   If so, I begin to understand the answer to one of my earlier questions about pre/post stretch routines.  If no, I need more study (well, I need more study regardless of what your answer is).

Thanks.

  • I should add, you can of course change the display of an already permanently stretched image. This confuses people sometimes. The STF doesn't care what kind of image you apply it to.

  • The fact that you can use STF to change the display of stretched images is what finally lit off the lightbulb in my head.  You didn't have to use a preview image for it like you did the others.

    Thanks.  That helps.
