Horizons M51 or Fundamentals M83

I watched the excellent M51 workflow video sometime ago. Now we have a new LRGB galaxy processing, the M83 in Fundamentals. Is the newer one the reference now?

  • Hmmm... I don't think there is a clear cut question/answer.
Really I suggest to look at the videos as a set of knowledge. There are ideas and demonstrations I show in older videos that are 100% valid. Other aspects of the software or techniques do age. For example... I doubt anyone would use PI deconvolution that has BlurXTerminator... right?

So what I think is instructive is to pay attention to the things that are the same and different.
Pattern recognition of the steps or decisions is a great goal.

The older video goes into detail of LRGBCombination ...the new one now highlights ImageBlend. I think you should know both. I do prefer ImageBlend- but in order to use ImageBlend.. you need to understand all of the foibles mixing color with a luminance image.

  • Perfectly understood. And seems that the new video do not use Ha Continuum Subtraction. The older technique is still valid, or is something newer now?
  • Well.. there are more visual ways of going about doing it:
Remember, you can search for a word like "continuum" on my site and it will show you related videos. Based on the published dates, you can see the chronology of old or new (not necessary replacing one another).
