Searching for specific tutorials and MLT with a star mask

Hi Adam and Blockheads,

I have a couple of questions.

1) Is there a way to search the tutorials/videos we site for specific words. As an example, I wanted to learn more about MLT, but did not know how to find examples. I googled MLT and Adam Block, which got me to a series of tutorials in Fundamentals, which was great. Perhaps MLT is also featured in Horizons? I've no idea.

2) I'm intereted in understanding different benefits from using MLT and LHE, the former I guess on linear images, the latter on stretched images.

3) For MLT used to enhance nebula detail, would it be beneficial to use SXT, instead of making a starmask prior to MLT? I'm guessing that some tools postdate when the MLT tutorial was made?

Many thanks.

  • Hi Mark,

    1. You should use the search tool on my site. Did you try it? It is at the top right of the page next to the login/logout button. Typing MLT will certainly show you some videos. Google should also work.

    2. MLT and LHE are two very different processes. You can utilize ONE aspect of MLT/MMT by adding biases to a spatial scale and do something similar to LHE. But it is not the same. MLT/MMT work on both linear and non-linear images. They are agnostic to this. There is an argument to be made that MLT/MMT on linear images are correlated with real structures in the data. When you stretch an image- this isn't true. The structures manifest as part of how the image is stretched. (A bright stretched area becomes a "thing" where it isn't something real in the data). But MLT/MMT can be used on masks, for example... and these are non-linear.

    3. The dates of videos are generally written either in the category or article where the videos are. Yes, the MLT/MMT videos predate star removal by a few years. Your idea is the way you should be thinking about things. I leave videos like MLT and MMT up ..because I have confidence the viewer can make this conceptual leap. "Adam is talking about a star mask... but today I can just remove the stars... " Would you agree?

  • 1) I had not noticed the search tool, but I just tried; it's great and I will use in the future.

    2) Thanks for lesson on MLT and LHE ...

    3) "Adam is talking about a star mask... but today I can just remove the stars... " Would you agree?

Absolutely I do agree - makes sense but my confidence with PI is still at a level where I benefit from guidance!

  • Yeah... it just isn't possible to go back and re-record for every change. I rely on the viewers (and my own judgement) to know when a video is so stale it really isn't useful. In this case, I think it is still OK without having to re-record. I will make new versions as needed.
